Nationals @ Columbia, SC

Travelling to Columbia, SC for the national round of 16, ESRFC was missing
six starters yet still optimistic.  The first match had the Green Horde
playing Blacksburg, a team from VA.  ESRFC came out very flat and gave up
several trys in the first half.  It was hot and guys seemed to be a bit
tired, probably from the lack of good rest the night before.  However,
after the half, the green horde came on strong, playing the tight pack game
we are accustomed to.  Unfortunately it was too little, too late.  The
Green Horde was not to advance to the finals after losing with a
final
score
of 29-19.

Sunday's game saw ESRFC matched up against the Pensacola Aviators.  The
Green Horde came out  a little slow going down a few trys early.  ESRFC
shook off the cobwebs and started dominating in the pack and came back to
regain the lead.  After going through several substitutions Pensacola took
advantage of a knock on and then a penalty to fight their way back and
score a game winning try with no time left on the clock.  Final score,
31-29, Pensacola.

Although heartbreaking, the trip to Columbia was a great learning
experience for the men of ESRFC.  The team travelled missing six starters,
with only a few subs and still performed well.  The trip to nationals is a
solid confirmation of the talent and ability possessed by our team.  With a
little commitment and dedication, we should be able to get back to that
point, if not further next year.

Nationals!

ESRFC qualified for the national playoff round of 16 by beating Fox Cities Gargoyles.  Match reports below.

The Eastern Suburbs were greeted in Grand Rapids, MI by foul weather as they took to the pitch on Saturday to face the Lexington Blackstones for the Midwest Championships. As thunderstorms threatened, the Suburbs started out slowly as Lexington went up 5-0 in the opening minutes. After ~ 15 min of play, lightning and torrential rains forced the match to be postponed for nearly 2 hrs until the storms passed. Storms still threatened and there was urgency to finish the match by referees and officials. The decision was made to eliminate half-time and thus play continuously for 65 min. After a quick warm-up the Suburbs were back in action as the Suburbs regained control and score was tied up 5-5 after quick phase play following a penalty inside the 22 m that had Lexington on their heels. The suburbs went up 10-5 on a try from…… which was followed by a penalty kick from Lexington 10-8. Lexington executed their kicking game which kept us pinned inside our own 22m late in the second half. A questionable penalty on a 5m scrum gave Lexington the final advantage as they kicked for points to put them up 10-11 with only seconds remaining to seal the game.

Surprisingly, the suburbs learned that the Bremer County Bucks, the winning team in the opposing bracket who was scheduled to play Lexington for top seeding at nationals, had elected to forfeit their bid to the nationals due to lack of players able to travel. This created a unique opportunity for the Suburbs which allowed the consolation match to serve as a qualifying game for the second Midwest seed to nationals. The following day the Suburbs met the Fox City Gargoyles in a mud bowl as a result of continued rain and poor field conditions from the previous day. With a chip on their shoulder and anxious to prove they belonged in the nationals the suburbs came out strong as nearly 10 trys were scored and held the gargoyles scoreless for the majority of the game. The final was 62-5.

The first round of the national playoffs will be in Columbia, SC May 16-17.  ESRFC is the #2 Midwest seed and is set to face the MARFU #1 team, Blacksburg on Saturday the 16th.

Old boys game scheduled for May 2nd!

The 3rd annual "old boys" game will be May 2nd.  The previous years' events have been a blast so be sure you don't miss the fun this year.  We are looking to have 3 twenty minute "thirds" with teams consisting of old and young mixed.  Teams will be drawn from hats and evened out where necessary.

This year we will have a tent or two and cook out at the pitch.  Social at the pitch also.

11/7/08 - ESRFC Advances to Midwest Tournament!

The men of ESRFC successfully dispatched Fox Valley RFC  46-12, earning a right to play for the Midwest championship and a potential national playoff berth.  The Midwest championship will take place April 25 and 26, most likely at the Chicago Blaze.

ESRFC will face off with the Lexington Blackstones in the first game of the tournament.  In April the men will be looking to erase the memory of last year's dissapointing first round loss to Lexington.  Please wish the men luck as they prepare over the winter.

The club will be holding several fund-raisers in the near future to help offset some of the travel costs.  More details to follow.
